Tsuruoka Tenjin Festival: Worship the Deity of Study

Tsuruoka Tenjin Festival is held every 24-26 May every year. Parade was held at the peak of the event, 25 May. I went to the road in front of city hall and sat with others. There were many people bring their own chair and sat along the road. Although the parade still not started yet.

鶴岡天神祭は毎年５月２４～２６日に開催されます。パレードはその期間の真ん中、２５日に行われます。私は鶴岡市役所の前で他の友人と共に見学しました。そこには自分の椅子を持ってきて、道に沿って座っている人がたくさんいました。まだパレードは始まっていないのに。

Tsuruoka Tenjin Festival is a festival to worship the deity of study, Sugawara no Machizane. He had to move from Kyoto to Kyushu area, in Dazaifu. He then hid his face, wearing straw hat, and brought sake to bit farewell with the people. Because his appearance is look like a ghost who appear in front of many people in the town, this festival is also called `Monster festival`.

鶴岡天神祭は、学問の神様である菅原道真をたたえるお祭りです。彼は京都から九州地方の太宰府へ左遷されました。そのとき、道真公を偲ぶ人々が、自分の顔を編笠で隠してその当時の権力をはばかりつつも、共に酒を酌み交わして別れを惜しんだそうです。その見た目が町の中に現れたお化けのようだったため、このお祭りは「化け物まつり」とも呼ばれます。

When me and my friends were waiting for the parade, there are so many people whom wore pink yukata called nagajyuban and straw hat while bringing drinks to imitate the people who are reluctant to leave from Machizane. We took a photo together, but I do not know why, other people who bring good camera also took picture of us. It is like we became an artist in no time. So embarrassing...

私と友達がパレードを待っている間、たくさんの人たちが道真公とのお別れを惜しんだ人達の真似をするために、お酒を運びながら長襦袢と呼ばれるピンク色の浴衣と、編笠をかぶっていました。私には理由がよくわかりませんでしたが、私たちが化け物たちと写真を撮っていると、良いカメラを持っている他の人たちも私たちの写真を撮り始めました。それはまるで一気にアーティストになったようでした。恥ずかしかった....

The parade started to walking at 2 pm and arrived in front of city hall around 3 pm. The front group is from Tsuruoka Tenmangu shrine which illustrate the departure of Machizane. Followed by some dancer who see him off.　The second group are from shopping district and one high school who bring a big ema (wooden plaque). Next group is Odori festival group or dancing parade by high school and elementary school students. They dance energetically, with so many enthusiasm, and full of smile. Just by seeing them dancing give me encourage and became happy too. The parade was closed by Enjoy Parade group from some office or business in Tsuruoka.

パレードは午後２時から進み始め、午後３時には鶴岡市役所の前に到着しました。最初のグループは鶴岡天満宮の方々で、道真公の出発の様子を表していました。彼を見送る人を模倣したダンサーたちもついていました。二番目のグループは、商店街と一つの高校の方々で、大きな絵馬を持っていました。その次のグループは高校生と小学生で踊りを披露してくれました。彼らの踊りは元気いっぱいで、熱気にあふれ、笑顔があふれていました。彼らを見ているだけで勇気をもらったし、幸せな気持ちになりました。パレードは、鶴岡市内の会社員の方々による、楽しいパレードグループが締めを飾りました。

It was my first time to see festival in Japan. After see this parade, I remembered the parade I always join in the last day of ramadhan. We walked about 2 km from Prambanan temple until district office, do some dancing and shouting that ramadhan is finish. It was tiring, and my throat became dry. But happy thing is, after that we got some money from our neighbors.

私にとっては日本のお祭りを初めて見る機会になりました。見終わった後、ラマダン（＊）の最終日にいつも参加していたパレードのことを思い出しました。私たちは、プランバナンからオフィス街まで２キロほど歩き、踊り、叫びます。そうしてラマダンは終わっていくのです。とても疲れますし、喉はカラカラになります。だけど、それが終われば近隣の人から、いくらかもらうことができるのはうれしいよね。

（＊ラマダンとは、イスラム暦における9月。イスラム教徒は、ラマダンの期間、日の出から日没まで飲食をしません。コーランと呼ばれるイスラム教徒の経典が、預言者ムハンマドに啓示されたとされる大事な期間（お祝い）です。）
