カンタン(Oecanthus longicauda)

秋の草むらからは多種多様な声が聞こえてきます。数多くいる鳴く虫の中で最も美しい音色を持つと言われているのがカンタンです。鳴く虫の女王と呼ばれることもあります。オスが鳴くのに女王はおかしい気もしますが。 この写真は馬見ヶ崎川河川敷でクズの葉にいた個体です。鳴き声だけは聞こえるもののその姿を見つける事は簡単ではありません。警戒心が強く一度刺激してしまうとなかなか再度鳴きだしてくれなかったのでその声を聴くためにかなりの時間くさむらの中でじっと待っていました。

A wide variety of voices can be heard in the autumn grasses. The Kantan(Oecanthus longicauda) is said to have the most beautiful sound of all the many singing insects. It is sometimes called the queen of singing insects. It may seem strange to be a queen. Only the male is making the sounds. This picture was taken on a Kuzu leaf in the riverbed of the Mamigasaki River. It's not easy to find them, though we can hear their call. Once I stimulated it, it didn't start singing again, so I waited patiently for quite a while in the weeds to hear its voice.
