One Day in Yuzawa Geopark

On Saturday, October 13th 2018, we joined 1st Outdoor Education with Local People in Yuzawa Geopark. We went from the campus at 8.30 am by car and it took about 2 hours to go to Yuzawa city. There was one crew pick us up to there and he was Yasuda`s sensei student. At 11 am we arrived at Yuzawa Geopark office in Yuzawa City, Akita Prefecture. They greeted and welcomed us very well. At the office, we were so lucky because there was a tea ceremony and the crew suggested to join that ceremony. First, we had tea ceremony and took some pictures and then we met all local guide that will study English together with us. There were 7 people. The crew made two groups, Azka`s group with 4 members and Dian`s group with 3 member. Mostly they were aged but they look healthy and energetic. We felt very happy to know all of them.

2018年10月13日土曜日、私たちは湯沢ジオパークに所属されている方と初回の屋外研修に参加しました。私たちは、8：30に鶴岡キャンパスを車で出発し、湯沢市まで２時間かけていきました。安田先生の研究室の卒業生でもあるスタッフの方が、私たちを連れて行ってくれました。11時に秋田県湯沢市にある湯沢ジオパークの事務所に到着しました。スタッフの方々はとても温かく私たちを迎えてくれました。事務所ではお茶会が行われていて、スタッフの方が私たちも参加しないかと誘ってくれました。本当に幸運でした。私たちは茶道を経験し写真を撮ることができました。そのあと、今回の研修で一緒に英語を勉強するローカルガイドさんと会いました。スタッフの方がグループを作ってくれて、アスカさんのグループは4人、ディアンさんのグループは3人で合計7人のローカルガイドさんがいました。多くの方は私たちの両親よりも年上のようでしたが、とても健康的で元気に満ち溢れていました。私たちは、皆さんと知り合うことができて、本当にうれしかったです。

After had small introduction, we left the office and went to the gather spot in Yuzawa geopark by using a car. Along the trip, we started talking using simple English and gave the guide some questions so they can practice to speak in English also. It was challenging! For about 30 minutes, we arrived at the gather spot and immediately had a lunch together. They served us a special lunch box of Yuzawa geopark which are free of alcohol, pork, and oil pork. We ate together happily. It was a delicious lunch, mmm oishii!

軽く自己紹介をした後、私たちは事務所を出発し、車で湯沢ジオパーク内の名所へ向かいました。道中に私たちは簡単な英語を使って話し始め、英語を話す練習をされていました。それは大きな挑戦でした。大体30分後に名所に到着し、お昼ご飯を一緒に食べました。なんと、私たちのために、アルコール、豚肉、豚肉の油を抜いた湯沢ジオパーク特製のお弁当を用意してくれました。私たちは一緒に食べて楽しみました。それはとてもおいしいお昼ご飯でした。ん～おいしかった！！

At 1 pm, after had a lunch and took a rest for a while, we went to the destination. There were two destinations we want to go. First, Dian’s team went to Oyasu-kyo and Azka’s team went to Daifunto waterfall, then we exchanged. Oyasu-kyo is valley views which has natural hot spring from geothermal and spurt hot gas through the cliff, while Daifunto waterfall is river views which has other small-high waterfall. Okay, let’s start the adventure!

お昼ごはんが終わって少し休憩を取った後、１時に目的地へ向かいました。この研修では２か所へ向かいました。初めにディアングループは小安峡へ、アスカグループは大墳湯へ向かい、後半ではそれぞれの場所を交換して行きました。小安峡は地熱からの自然の温泉があり、崖からは熱いガスが湧き出ている谷地でした。大墳湯は、規模の小さい高い滝がある川地でした。さあいよいよ冒険の始まりです！

When we went to Oyasu-kyo, it took about 10 minutes by bus. After that, we went to the destination spot by walk through the stairs because the place is hilly. Before we passed the stairs, the guide asked me to look the number of the counter. They said that the number was the amount of visitors at that day, and surprisingly the number was about 800. It means on that day, there were many visitors came to the place. After that, we started to go down through the stairs and the guide always took care of me to be careful because the stairs was very slippery. There were 300 stairs for went down and 400 stairs for went back. It seemed to be hard but surprisingly there were many aged visitors that still strong enough to go to the spot area of Oyasu-kyo, so we couldn’t give up hehehe

バスで１０分かけて小安峡へ行きました。その後、階段を通りながら目的地へと向かいました。その場所は起伏があるからです。私たちが階段を通る前に、ガイドさんがカウンターの数字を見るように言いました。そこには一日に何人訪問者がいたのか数えるカウンターがあり、驚くべきことにその数字は800でした。つまり、一日にこの場所を訪れた人が多くいたということを表しています。その後階段を通りましたが、とても滑りやすい場所だったので、ガイドさんがいつも私たちのことを機にかけてくれました。小安峡へ向かうときには300段、戻るときには400段の階段がありました。その道はかなり急だったのですが、多くのお年を召した方がその場所に訪れていました。彼らは小安峡へ向かうのに十分強い体力を持っていました。だから私たちも諦められませんでした。へへへ

After a few minutes, finally we arrived at the spot area. We walked along the river which contained boiled water from geothermal, but the guide said that even the water is very hot, there are some species of fish that can survive inside. Also, along the cliff, we can see the boiled water and some hot gas came out from the earth, therefore we can boil some eggs from that but unfortunately we didn’t have it huhuhu. The valley views was very incredibly amazing. We took some pictures and also selfies for memories.

2、3分後に、私たちはついに小安峡の名所に着きました。私たちは地熱による熱水を含んでいる川に沿って歩きました。ガイドさんによると、その川の水は熱いそうですが、その中でも生きることのできる魚が何種類かいるそうです。また私たちは崖に沿っている熱水や熱いガスが大地から出ているのを見ることができました。実はその熱水によって卵を茹でることができるそうなのですが、残念ながら私たちは持っていませんでした。ふふふ：）その谷地の景色は信じられないほど素晴らしかったです。そこで写真を撮ったり自撮りをしたりしました。

Second trip was going to Daifunto waterfall. It is one of the biggest waterfall in Yuzawa geopark. We also went there by walking but the trip was easier because not so hilly. Actually, there were three small waterfalls but we couldn’t see the stream due to the lack of water in its river and unfortunately we couldn’t see Daifunto waterfall at that time. The guide said that in two weeks later, Oyasu-kyo’s views would be very beautiful because of the changing color of autumn leaves. They asked me to came again and certainly we would be very happy if we could come back again.

二つ目の目的地は大墳湯です。それは湯沢ジオパークの中で最大の滝の一つです。私たちはこちらへも歩いて向かいましたが、起伏が激しくなかったので歩きやすかったです。そこには３つの滝があるのですが、実はその川の水が足りず見ることができませんでした。また、大墳湯もその時は残念ながら見られませんでした。ガイドさんによると２週間前の小安峡は紅葉が進んでとても美しかったそうです。彼らはもう一度来てねと誘ってくれました。もし私たちがもう一度ここに来ることが叶うなら、こんなに幸運なことはありません。

After we finished exploring the place, the guide brought me to the popular souvenir shop. When we arrived, we run away immediately because the time was limited. There were so many souvenirs and local foods sold by them. Finally we choose some local foods as a souvenir from Yuzawa geopark. After we finished, we bought choco banana and ice cream. Ice cream is very popular local food in Yuzawa geopark, so that’s why we have to tasted it.

名所の見学を終え、ガイドさんは有名なお土産屋さんに連れて行ってくれました。時間が限られていたので、到着次第走ってお店に行きました。そこにはたくさんのお土産や地元の食べ物が売られていました。私たちは、その地元の食べ物を湯沢ジオパークからのお土産として選びました。それが終わった後、チョコバナナとアイスクリームを買いました。湯沢ジオパークの名産品としてアイスはとても有名なので、食べてみなければいけないでしょう？

Time passed by so fast and unexpectedly it was already evening. The education program with local people finished and we returned back to the office. On the way back to the office, we talked to each other and shared how were our feeling after having trip to Yuzawa geopark. They told a story about their children and grand children, also we shared our contact each other. Before the crew brought us to the Yamagata University, some guides gave us some presents such as wood souvenir, hand cream, and cherry food. It was really touching and make us grateful. We said thank you so many times because we got the opportunity and precious moment. Before we left, there was one women crew hugged Dian with teary eyes and said “I hope I can see you again someday and I feel happy to know you sweet girls.” Her hug made us felt closer like we have known her for a long time. This was an unforgettable experience for us. We hope we can meet you all someday and learn English again together. Arigatou gozaimashita!

時間が過ぎるのはとても早く、すでに夜になっていました。研修は終わり私たちは事務所へ向かいました。その道中、私たちは湯沢パークへの旅行を終えての感想を分かち合ったり、お話をしました。ガイドさんは彼らの子どもや孫の話をしてくれました。そして、連絡先を交換しました。スタッフの方が私たちを山形大学まで送るときに、ガイドさんが木で作ったお土産やハンドクリーム、サクランボの食べ物などをプレゼントしてくれました。これには感動し、本当に感謝しています。私たちが去る直前に、一人の女性スタッフが涙ながらにディアンとハグし、「私はもう一度二人に会うことができるように願っているし、かわいい二人と出会えて私は本当に幸せだわ」といいました。彼女のハグによって、もう何年も彼女のことを知っているかのように近い存在に感じました。この経験は私たちにとって本当に忘れられないものになりました。もう一度彼らに会って共に英語を学ぶ時が来ることを心から願っています。ありがとうございました。
