Last Monday was our second mountain climbing in the last 3 weeks as an official laboratory activity. At this time, we climbed Mount Kinpo, which is approximately 8 km far from Yamadai. At 13:30, we departed by the university’s car. After about 20 minutes on the way, we finally arrived at the location.
After all lab members ready with their own items, we immediately start climbing the mountain. Before entering the forest area, Sato Sensei with several lab members took time to pray in front of the shrine. We hope the climbing activity will run as well until we return to the university. One thing that made me quite worried at the beginning when entering the forest was when I saw many warning signs of bears existence in the forest. I can't imagine what would happen if we met a bear in the forest later, therefore as preventing action, Sensei had provided a bell to be carried into the forest. The bell will continuously be sounded as long as we are in the forest. When the bear hears it, they will avoid and stay away from the sound, because if there is no sound and suddenly the bear sees a group of humans, that animal can be shocked, feel in danger, and directly will attack the human. But I was very grateful because we did not see a bear during the climbing activity on that day.
The way we passed initially was steep and slippery because of many litters which made it quite difficult to move, but soon afterward we finally passed a fairly easy way. We enjoyed the atmosphere along the way while sometimes chatting with each other, but Sagae san was at the back because he was trying to find butterflies in the forest and take pictures of them, and finally his struggled paid off. Sagae san was finally able to find a butterfly and captured it.
After about 1 hour of climbing, we finally arrived at our final destination. There was also a shrineso some lab members took time to pray. After that, we headed to a place to have a good viewpoint. That day was the first experience for me to be able to enjoy the view of Tsuruoka city from the top of the mountain. So beautiful and stunning! We also took photos together with all lab members. After enjoying the place, we decided to go down and back. Surprisingly, not only us did climbing on that day, but many other people were also doing the same.
On the way back, we took a different way. Indeed, the way was extreme because very steep and many rocks, but fortunately, it was shorter and not take a long time. When we reached close to the parking area, unexpectedly we met Yamadai students. They were searching for plant samples. After greeted them, we then headed to the car and went back. In the car, Sensei asked whether we want to see the sea or not. Of course, we want to see if we can and still have enough time. Immediately after, we decided to take a moment to the beach (near Kamo Aquarium).
Arriving at the beach, we initially wanted to go to the lighthouse, but unfortunately, it was prohibited because it might be dangerous. Then, we enjoyed the scenery around the beach and observed some organisms around the beach. After being satisfied to enjoy the atmosphere of the beach and because it was already late afternoon, we decided to go back to Yamadai.
Thank you Sensei and all lab members for the precious opportunity. That day became my first experience climbing mountain in ramadhan and it was challenging. One thing I can learn from this experience is that maybe we really have to work hard and might be facing a lot of difficulties at the beginning, but believe there will be good and satisfying things at the end.
