Laboratory Seminar

Laboratory seminar is held on every Wednesday started from 10.30 am. As usual as the previous seminar, there are two kinds of seminars in a day, those are eco seminar and 8-minutes seminar.

Eco seminar and 8-minutes seminar are different. For eco seminar, we have to search a journal from the determined website and summarize into a maximum of 5 pages consisting of 4 parts: introduction, material and method, result, and discussion. Basically, Japanese students summarize the journal into two languages, Japanese and English, meanwhile other foreign students only summarize into English. Each part is delivered in 10 minutes including discussion, so 40 minutes in total.

毎週水曜日の10:30から研究室のセミナーは開催されます。以前のセミナーのようにエコセミナーと8minセミナーの二種類があります。

エコセミナーと8minセミナーの違いというのが、まずエコセミナーは決められたジャーナルから論文を選び緒言、材料・方法、結果、考察を最大5枚の紙にまとめなければなりません。基本的に日本人学生は日本語版まとめと英語版まとめの二つを作ります。留学生は英語版のみを作ります。各パートディスカッションを含んだ10分間、計40分を使って講義を行います。

On the other hand, 8-minutes seminar has its own regulation. The websites for 8 minutes seminar is not determined so we can search for any journal from anywhere as long as it is still related to ecology. The journal will be summarized as simple as possible into a powerpoint slide, then presented in 8 minutes and after that 10 minutes of discussion.

No need to worry about time, because there is always a chair person who leads the seminar and arrange the time.

そして8minセミナーはジャーナルに制限は設けず動物生態学に関する論文を選びます。論文をできるだけシンプルにパワーポイントにまとめ8分間のプレゼンを行い。そのプレゼンを受けて10分間のディスカッションを行います。司会進行が時間配分してくれるので心配は要りません。

Recently, the seminar is a little bit different than usual. This time we have three master degree students from a different major who attended this seminar. They all are foreign students come from Mongolia, Chinese, and Africa. They seem to be very curious about the seminar because of the different major. They also looked enthusiastic and enjoyed the first seminar that was just held today as they tried to give some questions to the presenter. Furthermore, we have to give the reason why we choose our own journal and what is make our journal interesting not only for us but also for other participants.

最近、セミナーで少し変わったことがあります。専門の異なる3人の院生がセミナーに参加することになりました。彼らはそれぞれモンゴル、中国、アフリカからの留学生です。彼らは専門が違うためかセミナーに非常に興味を持ってくれているようでした。また彼らはプレゼンターにいくつも質問したり熱心に楽しそうに最初のセミナーに参加してくれたようです。また専門が違う参加者にもなぜその論文を選んだのか、どこに興味があるのかなどを説明しました。

This seminar may seem tougher and more nervous because we have to explain clear and simple information especially for the new participants, but I am sure this will be a very good exercise to practice public speaking skills, critical thinking, and our self-confidence.

新しい参加者のためによりわかりやすくシンプルに説明しなけらならないのでセミナーがより厳しくなったように思えます。しかし人前で話したり批判的な思考、自身を付けるための良い練習になると確信しています。
