Algae on the mud snail shell マルタニシに生える藻類

Did you know that algae able to live on the snail shell? Is this possible? The answer is “yes” it`s possible. Algae, especially filamentous algae have the ability to grow on the snail shell. The mud snail (Bellamya chinensis) already known has algae attached on its shell. The algae stick on the shell and stay for a long time. The algae not only have a place to live, but also some nutrients from the snail shell. Snail also feeds the algae that attached on the shell.

In my opinion, the relationship between algae and snail looks like mutualism symbiosis. That was amazing! Mud snail is very easy to found in the lake, pond, or paddy field in Japan. So, go there and find the snail with algae attached on the shell.
