Farmer Annual Seminar

Last Saturday (02/08) Our laboratory join to Syonai Kyodo Farm annual meeting. One of main event of this meeting is Sato Sensei special lecture for farmer. This time Sato sensei asked Shirai, Sagae and Arya to join this event and did some presentation about their research related topic. This event very important not just for farmer but for us as students to challenge our self for speaking in front of society. This event gave us many new knowledges. Because of three of us is different in age, nationality or area and perspective this article will based on our perspective.

Japanese Perspective (Takuya Shirai – M2)

I participated the meeting organized by Syonai Kyodo Farm. It comes 18 years from start this event, we think about agriculture in Syonai. Sato sensei asked us (Me, Arya, Sage) have a presentation at this event. We did in front of about 30 people, I talked about my research in Yamagata and report about my study abroad. In the morning, I practice to speak loud until it’s enough. Thanks to the practice, I could with confident and see the audience in the presentation, of course on time also. This become success memory of me. In addition, they are interested in my research especially when I show the map of distribution of mud snail in Syonai area, someone were surprised. My data will be satisfied… In the drink party, I talked with farmer about history of Mud snail. They corrected and ate in the past, but after strong chemical disappear. Not only snail but about farmer’s problem and worry, sometime about life with very delicious food and alcohol. Despite being in 40s, the farmers who are expected to be in the future and are entrusted with various positions seem to have arrived at the present through a twisted and twisted life. However, there are few generations under the age of 50s, and it seems that he struggling now. There are many children in Indonesian rural areas, and all the residents loved the village. Unlike Japan, it is said that there are few transfers to urban areas. They know they have everything they need and they don't have to leave, and the people stay there. That's an inspirational difference.

While enjoying, I could learn. These kinds of opportunity is so nice for students because many experiences not being able to in University. I also, got priceless time and memory. Aiming to blight future of agriculture, need cooperation more.

庄内共同ファームの総会に参加させていただきました。今年で18回目を迎える庄内の農業について考える大切な時間です。指導教官である佐藤先生から機会を頂き、聴衆（約30名）の前で自分の研究や留学経験を報告しました。当日の朝には声出しも行い、準備万全で臨みました。自信を持ち、聴衆に目を配りながら時間内に発表できました。これは私にとってさらなる成功体験となりました。内容についても興味を持っていただくことができました。特に、庄内平野全域で行ったマルタニシの分布調査ですが、結果を見せた際に“おぉー”という表情をされた方が多くみられました。毎日のように圃場を回って取ったデータたちがきっと喜んでいるでしょう。その後の懇親会でも、農家の方々にタニシの発生状況について伺い、昔はよく田んぼで採って食べたという話をいくつも聞きました。しかし、農薬の使用で減少したと実感されているようです。他にも、農家として抱える問題や不安、さらには人生についてお話を聞かせていただきました。40代にも関わらず今後を期待され様々な役職を任される農家さんは紆余曲折な人生を経て今にたどり着いたそうです。ただ、50代より下の世代がほとんどおらず、いま苦労されることが多いそうです。インドネシアの農村ではこどもがたくさんおり、住民はみな村を愛しておりました。日本とは異なり、都市部への移動も少ないといいます。必要なものはそろっていて、出ていく必要がないととらえ、住民はそこにとどまるのです。考えさせられる違いです。

もちろんおいしい料理とお酒を交えながら、それらを学ぶことができました。こうした機会は貴重で学生にとって有意義な経験となります。私自身、発表だけでなく、多くのことを経験させていただきました。これからの明るい農業に向けて一層一致団結した取り組みが必要ですね。

Japanese Perspective (Sagae – B3)

I participated in a farmer's forum Shonai area as a presenter. It was a very nice opportunity for me. I did a presentation about my recent research overwintering. Some farmers responded to my presentation. They wanted to know the situation of overwintering in some pest and how to control it using overwintering.

After that, we joined the party. I was able to talk with farmers very much and it was precious. They gave me information or hint for my research. Some farmers have a field which very attractive to me. They practice organic farming or environmental farming. So, there is so nice creature fauna. It is suitable to study the function of creatures. When I said I'm very interested, the farmers said, they want me to visit their field.

And they were worried about the future of agriculture. e.g. a successor shortage. They expect to our generation and cheering us. I received such words. And I feel we should try to make the effort to consider our future.

Finally, I hope the forum and encounters in this will be a great stimulus or chance for future college life.

庄内農家フォーラムにプレゼンターとして参加させていただきました。私の最近の調査テーマである生物の越冬について発表しました。何人かの農家さんにコメントをいただくことができました。農家さんの一人からはイネミズゾウムシの越冬の習性を利用して防除ができないのか、是非研究して欲しい。というような要望を伝えていただきました。

その後の懇親会では多くの貴重なお話を聴かせていただきました。私の研究にとってヒントとなる情報を多く与えていただきました。有機農業や減農薬栽培を行っている農家さんの圃場中には非常に豊かな生物相が保たれたものが多くあります。そこでの研究に私は非常に興味があります。水田における生物の機能を解明する上でそのような圃場が最も適しています。私がそのような圃場を見てみたい旨を伝えると農家さんたちからぜひ見て欲しいと言っていただきました。

また多くの農家さんは後継者不足など農業の未来を憂いていました。だから私たちに若い世代に頑張ってほしいと激励をいただきました。私たちはこれからについてもっと考えなければならないと先輩世代の方々と交流する度に思わされます。

最後に、このフォーラムはそこでの出会いは今後の大学生活にとって大きな刺激になってくれることを期待しています。

Indonesian Perspective (Arya-M1)

Farmer Seminar Activity for Indonesia students is very different like in Indonesia. Indonesia seminar farmer activity usually hold in village hall because lot of farmer will continue their activity directly to field. This activity so amazed for Indonesia students because lot of Japanese success farmer and almost of the farmer is organic farming farmer. During of Sato Sensei presentation, I can see many farmer enthusiasts to hear this special lecture. Presentation duration was 60 minutes included three students presentation Shirai-san, sagae-san and I as one of Indonesia student in Animal Ecology laboratory. This seminar topic was the role of biodiversity in organic paddy field. After presentation section this event closed by dinner. In my point of view about local farmer in Shonai Area is very friendly person. I was so surprised they were very welcome to foreign student. I think they are face of Japanese which is have a warm smile in their face. Many of farmer have lot of big knowledge and experience, as a student we shouldn’t just study about theory for me listening from them is real life knowledge not just about technique system but also social system. Some farmer told me about Japanese nowadays agriculture problem is no young people want to be farmer and young people population in Japan not so many. Compare with Indonesia we will have demographic bonus which is we will have lot of young people but there will be limitation in job vacancy. I think from this story we can suggest Japanese government and Indonesia Government should have a strong cooperation in agriculture sector in the future.

In this event some of farmer offered me some experience to homestay with them. I think this is big opportunity for foreign student for study about Japanese culture, social system and agriculture system. All of farmer in this event is professional farmer in organic and for Indonesian it is big knowledge because as we know japan has limitation in climate and some natural resource but they can fulfil their staple need such as rice. This opportunity can be positive impact for these two countries (Japan and Indonesia) because we can share our experience. This event is very important for me to give me a new motivation, spirit and idea.

　日本での農家研修はインドネシアとはとても異なりました。インドネシアではこのようなイベントは農村にあるホールで行われます。なぜなら、活動内容は実地と関係しているからです。今回のイベントは私にとって驚きでした。庄内から多くの農家があつまり、彼らの多くは有機農業を実践しています。佐藤先生のプレゼンテーションは特別で参加者は魅了されていました。時間は1時間で、途中学生の白井さん、寒河江さん、私もプレゼンテーションをしました。この研修のテーマは有機農業における生物多様性の影響です。プレゼンテーションの後はパーティーで幕を閉じました。私が思う庄内地域の農家はとても友好的です、私は彼らが私のような留学生に対してもウェルカムな態度にとても驚きました。温かい笑顔を忘れません。彼らは多くの知識と経験を持ち、技術だけでなく社会的な面でも生活の知恵を教えてくれます。それらは私たちが勉強だけで得るものとは異なりました。ある農家さんは今の農家はあととりがおらず、また日本の人口自体が減少していることを嘆いていました。インドネシアでは人口の面では異なりますが、若者の仕事は限られています。私はこれらの問題から日本とインドネシアの政府は協力する必要があると感じました。

　このイベントでは、何人かの農家さんがホームステイ先を紹介してくれました。これは留学生にとって日本文化、社会システム、農業システムについて学ぶ大きなチャンスだと思います。 このイベントのすべての農家さんは有機農業のプロであり、インドネシア人にとっては大きな知識です。なぜなら、日本は気候と天然資源に限界があるにもかかわらず、米などの主なニーズを満たすことができているからです。この機会は、私たちの経験を共有でき、2国間（日本とインドネシア）にプラスの影響を与えることができます。 このイベントは私に新しいモチベーション、精神、アイデアを与えるために非常に重要でした。
